Where There's A Will

Book Description

“This is the best news ever!” exclaims thirteen-year-old Charly when she reads the letter left for her by the deceased Katherine O’Leary on the kitchen table of the house on Northumberland Strait. At the end of The Ghost of Northumberland Strait, the ghost had willed the house and all its contents to Charly – contents including the gold coins hidden there. Unfortunately, nothing is ever that simple.

Will Charly manage to overcome the difficult obstacles that bar her from finally owning what Katherine left to her? Will she and her family ever claim the fortune that lay in the old house – a fortune that could turn their lives around? There’s a lot against Charly and her quest for a home, but there’s also evidence that Katherine is still on her side and still involved in the lives of the living. It seems the long-dead Katherine O’Leary may still hold the key to Charly’s dreams coming true.

When for reasons unexplained a thief’s truck rolls over into a snowy ditch and an unwanted freeloader is chased out of the O’Leary house, it becomes quite clear that Katherine’s ghost may not be visible but is most definitely present. With help from the ghost’s well-intentioned interference and her own courageous tenacity, Charly pursues her goal of making the O’Leary house her own.

Charly knows something is up with that old, abandoned house on Northumberland Strait the day that four of them break in and snoop around. While the other kids are satisfied to stay out of the spooky house after that, Charly feels drawn back to the place and knows she has to return alone. She does return and is swept into a time-traveling adventure during which she makes the most unlikely friend – a woman who’s been dead since long before Charly was born.

Book Reviews:

What Quill & Quire says about The Ghost of Northumberland Strait:
Charly is a fully realized 13-year-old, and Grammie is especially vividly drawn. Katherine is also well realized, and the way she interacts with Charly...provides an unusual twist on ghost story conventions. Many readers will love this poignant, hopeful novel.

~ from Quill & Quire, March 2008

Midwest Book Review:
The Ghost of Northumberland Strait is a chapter book for young adults, following a thirteen-year-old girl named Charly (with a "shhh") who moves to Prince Edward Island with her mother and sister. When she and her friends dare to break into an old weather-worn house, she feels the emanation of a mysterious presence. Drawn to investigate the mystery further, she discovers the building transformed into the grand manor it once was, and inhabited by a young woman only Charly can see. A thoughtful, haunted mystery, sure to captivate young readers to the very last page.
